Catching Up!

Rain today, which has given me the opportunity to sit in front of the computer and update the Dyffryn and Talybont Gardening Club blog!

Apologies for slight hiccup in reporting events here:- I seem to have been tied to the potting bench for the last 2 months.

To recap:-

Sadly I was away for the March Spring show, which took place on a Saturday this year, it also moved from its usual venue of the Church Hall to the Village Hall, and this combination meant that while entries were slightly up on last year, visitor numbers were down. It was however a lovely show which Kate has written about in a blog post titled “Gardeners are Mad”

Our press officer Sian Ward also wrote this piece:-

“There was an increase in entries for the club’s spring show on 22nd March at Dyffryn Ardudwy village hall.

Chairman Tony Bowers thanked exhibitors of all ages, despite recent weather conditions for wonderful displays, the committee for their support and to all those who had made the event a success including judges Mrs Dutton and Mrs Killick, hall committee, photographer Mr Erfyl Davies and last but not least, the visitors.

Club president Guy Lloyd presented a cup to the best flower or shrub exhibit to Sandra Prior and to Pam Bowers for the best flower arrangement and also a bowl for the best show exhibit. Congratulations to all winners and a full list of winners will be available on the club’s website.

Winners were: Large cup/trumpet daffodil or narcissi Mark Roberts- Jones; small cup Kate Santon; double/split corona Bryan Gatehouse; small multi-flowered cup Kate Santon; dwarf/miniature Sian Ward; tulips Marilyn Woodley; hyacinths Bryan Gatehouse; any other flowering bulb/corm Guy Lloyd; polyanthus Marilyn Woodley; Primroses Elaine Watt; Hellebores Marilyn Woodley; camellia Tony King; flowering tree or shrub Sandra Prior; flowers not already mentioned Elaine Watt; flowering pot plant Margaret Lloyd.

April was the club’s A.G.M. held at the Royal St Davids Golf Club Harlech, again a report from Sian

“The AGM of the club was held on 14th April at Royal St. David’s, Harlech with thirty one members attending and nine apologies.

Chairman Tony Bowers welcomed all present before continuing with club business and his report on the last successful year’s events. Thanks were given to committee members for their support throughout the year.

Due to rising costs and to enable the continuation of quality speakers, it was voted in favour to increase the subscriptions to £5 per annum. These payments are now due to the treasurer.

A copy of the club’s constitution was circulated, with minor changes being accepted by those present.

The club’s charity, Air Ambulance had also written to thank for donations received.

Club president Guy Lloyd then presided over the election of officers. Retiring chairman Tony Bowers was thanked for all his work, firstly as vice chairman and chairman since 2011. He was presented with a gift as appreciation. Unfortunately Pam Bowers was unable to attend, but was presented with a bouquet of flowers as thanks for her support.

A bouquet of flowers was also presented to Sian Ward who was standing down as press officer since 2007.

Karen Hall was unanimously elected as the new chairman and Sue Hopwood as press officer, with Kate Santon filling the vacant committee post. All other committee members were re-elected.

Karen gave a presentation on the year’s forthcoming events and announced the winner of the preceding year’s competition winner with the most points as Tony King.

The meeting was then closed and members withdrew for dinner. Thanks to Royal St David’s for their hospitality.

Upcoming events are garden visits at 2pm on 28th April firstly to Bryn Dedwydd and then to Bryn Horeb, Dyffryn Ardudwy, followed by a trip to Chirk castle on 12th May. Contact Mary Howell for trip details”.


Err, yes, you read that right, I am the new Chairman of the gardening Club! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony for his stewardship of the club over the past few years and to Sian for her sterling work as press officer.
